What is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese energy healing practice and complementary approach to medicine, which attempts to transfer universal energy in the form of ki through palm-healing techniques. Ki is the Japanese version of qi, the life force energy that sustains our existence, and rei is the Japanese word for spirit. Thus, Reiki means “spirit life force.”  

Similar to acupressure, Reiki is centered on the idea that an imbalance or blockage of ki results in a higher susceptibility to physical illness, mental anxiety and emotional difficulties. Reiki healers channel energy to the client to bring the client's energy back into alignment and remove any blockages to help the client heal. It is believed that Reiki energy flows where it is needed and works on the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of the person to facilitate personal healing in a holistic manner.

Instead of manipulating the physical body, Reiki practitioners work with the energy field penetrating the body, positioning their hands lightly on or above the client so the energy of the universe may be channeled through one body and into the other. The method is comparable to meditation in this regard, as both are noninvasive therapies grounded in self-healing.

During and after a session, clients will often experience deep relaxation, a feeling of connectedness, pain reduction, and an improved sense of well-being.
